“Seriously Slunge can’t you just send me encrypted messages or something?”
Lilith questioned the morbid obese Brenchian, crime lord. She had only been in his office for about a minute now waiting as best she could for the man that hired her most of the time to finish reading over something on his desk. Although she asked the question Lilith was certain of the answer and the reason that was never going to happen. The mere fact this monster of a Brenchian still resorted to writing things down on paper and keeping them that way told her that he wasn’t going to take any chances on someone hacking into any technology he did use.
“Never. If I gave you your assignments from afar I’d never get to see my favorite little shadow in my underground sea.”
Lilith had to resist the urge to physically shutter at the remark. Although she had been working for Slunge going on several months now killing over a dozen small time targets for him the sight of the scum was still just too repugnant. Although Lilith didn’t consider herself Brenchian the fact Slunge didn’t have a solid coloration was sickening to her. It was perhaps the biggest thing that bothered her while also being the thing she wanted to know most about in regards to her boss. How it had happened and why didn’t he just fix it?
“Now, no taking chances this time. Your target is someone I need taken care of swiftly. He’s a part of the underground here on Brench, but his head is getting too big and needs to be taken off. Same as always handle it and your pay will be here for you when you return.”
Something was off about this. Slunge was giving off an aura that he hadn’t on any other occasion. Lilith wasn’t sure why as this seemed very straight forward and frankly easy, although in truth she wasn’t sure yet given that the file on her target was still on Slunge’s desk. She’d find out in a moment though as one of the four bodyguards that were in the room took the envelope and brought it over to Lilth. Massive behemoths lizards each of them so large that Lilith was certain it would take at least five well placed shots to finish any of them.
Lilith paused for a moment though in shock. She’d missed something and only just realized it now upon seeing the lizard get the envelope. Slunge normally only had two body guards in this room with him. So why were there four? She hadn’t picked up on the fact that there was another one stationed several meters behind Slunge’s desk no doubt watching his back, while there had been another at the entrance to this underground room. Slunge was protecting himself more than usual, but why?
“You need a phone, old man.”
Lilith turned once she got the envelope only a moment after making her remark and starting to walk towards the entrance that served as her only way in or out, no doubt hiding whatever hidden exit was available for Slunge.
“You need a man, young lady.”
Lilith couldn’t contain the shiver of disgust this time at the remark. Biting down on her lower lip as her hands clenched together into fists. Slunge witnessing just began to laugh further establishing his dominance over the Young Shadow of the Brenchian Capital underbelly.

Lilith took step after step through the enveloped tunnel of the sewer system beneath the capital. These tunnels really saw more traffic than anyone on the surface would expect while giving so many that belonged to the underbelly, free access to virtually anywhere in the city. Certain areas were lit up and had cameras stationed such as hospitals, police of government buildings. Lilith could surmise that the government on Brench knew that the criminals on the planet used the tunnels, but didn’t have the manpower to actually control them all though so just protected what they deemed essential.
Since starting her career as an assassin on Brench, Lilith had gotten used to the tunnels. Although perhaps it wasn’t fair to compare her to the rest unlike those that simply adopted darkness to survive nor even those who are blessed enough to be born into it, Lilith was stronger. The connection to darkness itself Lilith believed in her was supreme. The Erebos blessing had made her a champion of that which is most pure and thus even as she walked throughout complete absence of light Lilith had no hesitations nor difficulty transversing throughout the tunnels.
She’d been down here for the last few hours searching in the area where her target was believed to be hiding. The file that she had been given by Slunge informed her that he was a scientist here on Brench. One that sought to find a connection between the biological organisms of the universe. Lilith thought that was simple enough, everyone pretty much walked on two legs and most of them were idiots that couldn’t figure out basic things. Problem solved, issue finished, game over. Apparently not though as the scientist had started to experiment on those not given to him as test subjects. Although what he was attempting to do to them Lilith had no idea. Whatever it was Slunge had hidden that bit from her although it wouldn’t affect her assignment. Whatever he was working on made him a target for Slunge so in order to get paid he’d have to die, simple as that.
Lilith was starting to question whether or not the information she had been given though was correct. At this point it seemed like she wasn’t going to find her target down here in this section of the sewers. There was always the possibility that he managed to move from the last time they knew his location. Lilith knew she was lucky though and only willing to continue looking for this long because of it. The section of the sewer that she was in didn’t have much disgusting corrupted liquid passing through it like a vein. Only enough running through the center of the tunnel that she could easily keep to the side and not ruin the bottom of her clothing.
Lilith’s reflexes jumped into action a moment later though as a noise not caused by her own movements occurred. She could hear the sound of something small sprinting across the tunnel floor. So small in fact that it couldn’t possibly be any individual, not even a child. This sounded more like some sort of tiny animal. Looking throughout the tunnel while doing her best to track the source of its footsteps, Lilith after a moment catches sight of the creature. A small hairless looking thing with multi colored skin. It wasn’t cure, no more strange as the colors didn’t have any pattern and seemed random from red, blue, yellow even purple.
Lilith hadn’t seen this thing or anything like it in the sewers before so chose to follow it. Thankful that she didn as the thing led her down a three way split in the tunnel she had been walking. After a few minutes passed Lilith was brought to a door. The little creature managed to squeeze itself under the barrier in a way that made Lilith question if it even had bones. Not wishing to scare the creature away Lilith channeled her ki and allowed the darkness to consume her.
Sinking into the darkness that covered the ground as swiftly as one falls through water. However, unlike that limited element Darkness possessed no limitations. Rising just as elegantly as she had sank yet on the other side of the door. Lilith noticed now that this was some sort of building basement. There were lights yet small and few, only enough to grant a small dim amount of awareness to the inferiors in the universe. Small rapid squeeks filled the basement brought about by the creature that Lilith was following.
Lilith watched as it approached the generator that no doubt heated the entire building. Based on the size of seven feet and a width of five feet Lilith assumed the building was at least six stories. These sorts of generators were common on Brench although reliability wasn’t always the strongest aspect. Why this creature was seeking a generator Lilith had no clue and assumed her little detour brought about by curiosity was about to cease. What actually happened though Lilith wouldn’t have ever guessed. The small creature no bigger than either of her hands bit the side of the generator and immediately all noise and light from the technology vanished.
Lilith wasn’t sure what to think until after a few moments when the creature turned and Lilith could see the eyes had gone from typical tiny dots, to pools of lightning coursing off the ends of its face. “This thing can eat power.”

Lilith made it a point to stay enough distance away from the strange creature that it wasn’t affected by her presence. Her assignment wasn’t in the forefront of her mind right now after finding something like this. She’d never heard of an animal that could eat energy although since she’d seen it with her own eyes there was no disputing it. At the same time though she realized how useful such an animal could actually be in a multitude of ways. The thing she was most curious about though was how many of them were there?
It was easy to track now that it had glowing eyes surging with electricity so over the course of the next ten minutes Lilith followed it until it took a turn and walked through a small hole in the tunnel wall. Standing in front of that section of the wall Lilith thought for a moment how strange this was, this didn’t look like a hole that could occur from age and decay. It looked like it had been cut in the shape of a square. Channeling her ki Lilith allowed the darkness to embrace her as she sank down into the depths of the true abyss.
Only to rise up in an instant on the other side. The room was nearly pitch black with only a few dozen dots of light in a row at about five feet high off the floor. Something knew she was there though as the light in the room went on and Lilith could hear the sound of something turning. Channeling her ki once again Lilith emanated darkness seeping off her being only for the black smoke to swirl around her. A surge of pressure from her ki was given off as the darkness solidified into a suit of pure darkness.
No sign of what she normally looked like was given now completely hidden behind an armor was as deep as the void of space. In the moment that followed Lilith felt the impact of a laser slam against her left shoulder sending her backwards against the wall. Comparable to being hit with a softball at a good pace it hurt, but thankfully her armor protected her from suffering a much worse injury. Rolling across the floor Lilith had to channel her ki once again. She had seen that there was a turrent located up the steps of the room which more than likely led to something else.
She wasn’t willing to take any chances of giving this turret another clean hit. Evading two more shots that burned through the wall turning the metal into hot liquid, Lilith managed to shape her ki of darkness into a bow as dark as her armor. The longbow took shape as Lilith stood knowing that rolling with such a thing would be more difficult than it was worth. So pulling back on the string and channeling her ki an arrow of dark ki was fired off clashing with the next shot by the turret only to pierce through the beam. Although severely weakened by the beam the arrow continued forward moving through the barrel of the weapon and destroying its ability to fire.

This definitely was something else that Lilith hadn’t anticipated. Now that she wasn’t being shot at she could tell what the lights had been while the room was dark. Small cages that seemed to be the homes of these strange creatures. Over three dozen cages and most of them were empty. Lilith could see that along with the one that she had followed back here there were only three others. So the sewers had at least thirty three others scurrying around?
Lilith didn’t know for sure and there was no way for her to know. That didn’t mean she wasn’t curious though, especially about why someone had a turret set up and ready should anyone manage to get in. Making her way towards the turret Lilith went up the steps and found a door. Heavily reinforced with no visible lock on this side which was strange. Wouldn’t someone want to keep these things inside her more secure? Either way she didn’t care, pulling back her bowstring and firing several times at the edges of the door.
After the sixth arrow the door had enough it’s frame damaged causing it to fall backwards away from Lilith granting her access to whatever was on the other side.
“So you’re going to stop everything I’ve done? Everything I’ve worked so hard to accomplish? Well I won’t . . “
Lilith hated people like this, ranting and raving about all their effort. Everything started in darkness and everything will return to it eventually. It took a moment, but the man that began speaking gave up his appearance when he turned around from the computer screen he was staring into when the door fell. He was the target she had been sent to eliminate. So it made sense now why she hadn’t been able to find his whereabouts. He’d altered the tunnels to hide and now his own experiments she assumed had given up his location.
Lilith got right to work ending his no doubt minutes worth of speech with a simple arrow to his head. His corpse fell sideways which meant her assignment was nearly complete now. Although Lilith couldn’t lie to herself about being curious still in regards to those creatures. She took the next hour or so to look over the files on this idiot's computer learning about them and what he had done. Turns out they weren’t creatures of his design, instead some that had been found out in Sector X-17.
He’d been studying them, testing what they could do along with other various things about them. The multicolored appearance of their skin was apparently caused from reading the flesh of different Brench which altered their own, no telling what they naturally would have looked like as it seemed even offspring carried some sort of coloration now. Seems they could breed far more easily than most multiplying the total numbers like a wildfire. For whatever reason they seemed to never leave Sector X-17 with the exception of the ones currently under this guys control. Lilith could only imagine why they’d stay in one location let alone one with far less energy than the Capital. After a bit though she did find something a bit more worth the time spent.
It seemed that all of them had a small chip surgically injected into them which suppressed their natural urge to mate and consume energy. They only would do so when he’d deactivate the chips. “What’s life without some chaos.” Lilith turned off the inhibitors, opened all cages only to download the information onto two separate information containers. Afterwards the Young Shadow made her way back through the secret entrance turning off all power to the base of an idiot. Now the creatures would be allowed to scurry throughout the Capital constantly breeding and eating, spreading chaos as the energy of the Capital had further stressed placed on it. She couldn’t contain the smile that spread across her lips at the thought of this bright buzzing city engulfed by total dark silence.
The Current-Crunchers are in the Capital!
