[Thread PL: 435 (Flavored to 90)][Current Outfit: Elfen Casual] After an afternoon full of brutal training at Ayami's home under the hands of the family master Aya, the shade of night had finally fallen. It was 11 PM now. With the cover of night a whole new beauty revealed itself on this islet: The sky was filled with thousands of stars. It was a view you couldn't get in the big cities, and perhaps a view Tomina knew well. The air was still save for the rare breeze blowing in from the sea, it rustled the tree branches, creating a calming rhythmic sound. The workshop Ayami had shown to the sisters was alive with the sound of activity. Light beamed out from within illuminating the darkened pathway outside and the ringing sound of a hammer impacting metal echoed out into the forest, making all around aware that the inventor was embroiled in her projects, burning the midnight oil to create something amazing. The door was unlocked so that Tomina could enter as soon as she arrived, just as the water elfen had promised.
Inside the workshop the inventor was hard at work creating something top secret.Stepping inside one would see just how warm it was here. The colors were warm, the various contraptions that ran were warm, even the temperature was warm. One certainly wasn't at risk of freezing to death in here. The workspace was cluttered, but didn't seem to slow the young inventor down at all as she zipped from desk to desk working on so many different parts and pieces. Every single desk was covered in tools, scrap parts, flask and vials, and a variety of lighting instruments such as steel cage lamps and glowing oddities. A fish tank sat above a cabinet and held an octopus who seemed no worse for wear in it's small world. Shelves scattered around the room held knick knacks, throw away inventions, prototypes, all manner of items Ayami found to be "interesting". Really stepping into her workshop was like stepping into another world. And at the center of the room was the owner of the workshop herself, goggles down over her eyes as she carried a cheerful grin on her face. She kept herself focused on her work but should Tomina make her presence known the elfen would be quick to take notice!
The contraption she was working on was interesting from an outside perspective: It was a pressure plate which had chains laying out on both sides. To test it the inventor pressed her finger down on the plate, and in an instant the chains violently retracted into a compartment underneath, wrapping themselves up neatly in a coil."Excellent! That's one part down! Nyehehe~...Operation "Mafia Drop" is already making great progress!" Tomina

[Thread PL: 210 (flavored to 138)] One’s state of mind was a curious thing. Tomina knew that this was a very nice evening. Probably the nicest one she had ever encountered, weather-wise. The ocean was nearby, so there was a gentle sea breeze blowing through the air. Her hair waved as she moved towards the workshop. Although it barely seemed to register with her. She was walking like she was moving closer to the gallows. She was going to confess to something she hadn’t told anyone before. Why she was so afraid of using her powers. It was a sin so egregious that she had accepted her life as a transient. And now she was going to talk about it, with someone she had just met no less. Granted she could tell that Ayami was trustworthy. But that didn’t make it any easier. She stopped when she got to the door to the lab. Taking a deep breath, hesitating to go forward. Then she opened the door and stepped inside, making sure it closed behind her. What she saw when she entered the room made her jaw drop. She had been expecting something similar to a garage, only bigger. What she entered into was a space that looked like a mix between a library and a laboratory. It was warmer than she expected. She looked around in awe, almost at a loss for words. “Ayami… this place is amazing. Did you design it?”

The elfen was deep in her work, zooming in on intricate pieces with her goggles' magnification function to ensure that she didn't mess up even the minute detail in her plans. She hammered on the steel pin to carefully stick it into a hinge, she then dropped her hammer onto the table and rushed over to a second desk, looking at a blueprint that had been carefully rolled out and held open with "Paper weights". Which in reality were two pieces of steel, a jar full of hydrochloric acid, and a lantern. As she looked it over the sound of the door shutting and Tomina's voice snapped the inventor out of her work-driven trance. She turned around and smiled at the half-breed fire user, lifting the goggles up onto her forehead."Mina! You came!"Ayami stepped over calmly and gave Tomina a big hug, listening to the firey one's question and releasing her."Yep! I made it all myself! Well...The villagers helped me put the walls and roof up. But I planned the whole layout and everything on my own. I even installed the electricity personally! I did that for our house too. Y'know before I made my workshop the place didn't have electricity at all! The whole island was stuck in the stone age honestly. It blew!"The inventor quickly returned to her work, although now she kept one ear open to listen to her visitor. It would be rude to ignore her after inviting her after all! Ayami took a pen and scribbled onto the blueprints, rubbing her chin with a free hand."If I adjust the angle like that and reshape the pin, then it'll smack right into them with enough force to knock them out...But I gotta account for the chance they wont hit it dead center, so I need to add a coefficient calculation on top so that it can still deal some serious damage...But I'll need to make a few of THOSE so that I can still take out some thugs if they avoid it entirely...Yeah...Fifty of these will do..."As Ayami zipped back over to the first table, she glanced over at Tomina, speaking up as she tapped away on a steel plate to work out some dents and shape it properly."So! You were gonna tell me about why you've got a mess weighing on your noggin? Oh, can you hand me that arc welder? It's the L-shaped brass tube connected to that tank over there. Careful not to press the trigger!" Tomina

"Of course I came! Did you doubt that I would?"
Tomina didn’t return the hug Ayami gave her. It was a little awkward, if she was being completely honest. She knew this was a platonic gesture, but she felt like she was betraying Lucy every time this happened. But she didn’t shy away from the embrace at least. When Ayami stepped back a little, she glanced around the room again.
“Damn, you even got the villagers in on helping you make this place? Now I really wish I had grown up here. Nobody is that eager to help others in the city. Still, you must have come up with the design for this workshop. You’re so lucky, having all the space to make this place.”
There was one thing about what Ayami said that got her attention. She followed her over to the workstation, watching as she got back to doing what she had been doing.
“You can just produce electricity? How did you manage that? And what the hell kind of weapon are you making?”
It would be a major upgrade to her own house if she could get that setup. That and proper plumbing. It seemed like Ayami could potentially help with both. After they took care of this gang business. Some things just took priority. Tomina fumbled around, looking for the part Ayami asked for. She set it on the table next to the inventor. Then she turned and looked at one of the tanks.
“I nearly burned my best friend to death and ruined her life. That’s why the orphanage burned that day. I got mad at her over something she couldn’t even control.”

Ayami smiled and gave a light laugh at Tomina's words. She shook her head as she worked."No I figured you'd show up. I just didn't know how long you'd wait!"To say the half-elfen was impressed would be an understatement. She expressed envy over having that many people willing to help out. It was definitely true that the big cities didn't ever go this far for people, but then...Big cities had fewer people who knew each other personally, so it made sense. It was just the way of life for them."Yeah...Ever since I was born it's been like that. Can you believe most of them were there to see me come into the world? We all kinda have this symbiotic relationship. My family keeps them all safe, and they pitch in helping each other out, including us. There's a lot of us but I can name every single person who lives here. Y'know...They're always willing to welcome newcomers. There's still so much space on the island for another home. I guess it'd take some getting used to for someone who never grew up here but...If you really want that lifestyle then why not?"Ayami took hold of the arc welder and lowered her goggles over her eyes to shield from the light. She began to weld two flat metal disks together to create the beginnings of another pressure plate. She continued speaking as she worked."Yep! I personally designed every inch of my workshop! It's my greatest creation in my opinion!"She stopped welding after shaking the two disks to ensure they were tightly fused together. She raised the goggles once more and grinned brightly as Tomina expressed amazement at the electricity. Although...It wasn't quite as impressive as the halfling might have thought."No, no I don't make my own electricity unfortunately. The main island has a power plant and they let me connect a line from there to this islet. It wasn't easy but we managed! Although if you really needed self-sustaining electricity, I know how to make a waterwheel! As for this baby..."The inventor held the pressure plate up to show Tomina in better detail."It's a chain trap! Once someone steps on it, the chains violently retract, smacking those baddies all over their bodies and wrapping around them! Then it pulls taut so they're tied up! It's the perfect mixture of a one-hit KO machine AND a capture device! I've got more planned...But this is just the first step. We'll have home-field advantage if we get back to Penguin village soon enough. I'm gonna turn that town into a nightmare for Dom Remy and his gang!"The young elfen went silent as Tomina finally revealed what she had been hiding for so long...It wasn't as though she was judging Tomina, if anything she understood how tough that was. The inventor continued her work but began to speak once again."...Why'd you get mad at her? If you don't...Mind my prying."Fighting with former best friends...The elfen's mind wandered back to Candence. The girl who taught her everything she knew about inventing...The girl she pushed away when it was entirely her fault. She wanted to tell Tomina about it, but it wasn't yet time for that...It could come once the fire user had gotten everything out in the open. Tomina

“Well, there’s no point in delaying the inevitable, ya know? Figured I might as well come as soon as I could. I don’t really like waiting anyway.” Patience wasn’t a virtue Tomina really employed. Despite trying her best, she was more inclined towards sin then virtues as a whole. So she couldn’t help but feel envy when Ayami went into detail about how close she was with the people in her community. She slipped her hands into her pockets, looking at the inventions Ayami was putting together. “People should be able to live the life they want to live. Oftentimes it doesn’t work out that way though. The world moves on with or without you. Most of the time you’re caught in the flow in some way. Still, I like how my life is now. For the most part.”
Tomina couldn’t help but be disappointed that Ayami had a powerplant to work with. Well that kinda killed most of her hopes for getting electricity. She wasn’t sure she would be able to set up a water wheel close enough to her house. She turned her attention back to the inventions she could focus on though. She gave Ayami a grin, patting her on the shoulder a couple of times. “Damn, that’s badass! We’d have to be careful to make sure civilians don’t end up in that trap though. Still, this should give us a big advantage!” The good mood evaporated when she had to go into her sins. She looked down, biting her lip. “It happened when we were fighting over a toy. I wanted to keep it as a keepsake, but Tsukihime wanted to take it with her. The toy wasn’t the real reason why I was angry though. That was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. She was getting adopted, and I wasn’t. I didn’t have that many friends at the orphanage. A lot of them called me a freak because of my red eyes. I can’t prove it, but that’s probably why I wasn’t adopted for 8 years.”Tomina looked up, a sad smile on her face. It wasn’t all bad there. But there were a lot of aspects of her life that made her want to leave that orphanage. But there were things that made life there bearable, and in one case, better. “Tsuki was different though. She was amazing. She was the first person I met who was talented with Ki. I didn’t know what it was at the time though. She could fly and produce small energy balls. I was so clumsy at flying. I nearly crashed into the light fixture in the foyer cause I flew like a drunken goose. Tsuki flew like a crane. She was so elegant and precise. She was only two years older than me, but the difference was nice and day. It’s fitting that she flew like that. Her dream was to attend the crane school and become a martial artist. She saw that as her ticket to making something of herself.”
Tomina sighed, turning and walking towards the middle of the room. Tsuki had known what she wanted from life. She had a goal and worked hard to get to that point. By comparison, she had no idea what she wanted to do. Other than leave the orphanage. Her gaze turned upwards, towards the bookshelves above her. “She wasn’t afraid of me. She taught me how to fly properly. She was the best friend I had ever had. But then, when I was 15, two people came in and wanted to adopt her. And just like that, she was going to leave me behind. She promised she would keep in contact. I wanted to be happy for her, but…” Tomina looked down, her body trembling. She had to force herself to speak louder now. It was hard for her to get all the words out. “I didn’t think it was fair. I was there since I was 7. Tsuki’s parents died in the military, so she came to the orphanage earlier than me. But I had been there for 8 years. 8 years of people just coming and going and not wanting me. And then things boiled over. And then I…” Tomina let out a choked sob, burying her face in her hands. It was such a stupid, impulsive moment. She was just so angry. She was mad at the fact that most of the other orphans were mistreating her. That she was never adopted close to a decade of being there. And that Tsuki was leaving to live a happy life. She knew it wasn’t her fault, but in that moment she was so furious that all rational thought had left her. And then the flames had burst forth and enveloped Tsuki. She could still hear the screams, still feel the heat as the orphanage came apart around them.

Tomina expressed a mixture of excitement and concern over the traps Ayami was creating. The fire user's concern over the citizens prompted a smile from the inventor as she gave a thumbs up."I'll make sure they stay indoors, I've got a plan for them too."It just went further to show the water elfen that despite all that Tomina said about herself, all that she clearly thought about herself that she wasn't a bad person. She put the safety of citizens ahead of her own excitement over seeing those traps in action. It was a sentiment the young inventor shared, hence her plans taking those villagers into consideration. Then came the revelations...Those painful memories Tomina had hidden deep inside all this time. The elfen listened to the halfling's every word. Words laced with sadness, a deep pain and so much guilt. her friend was leaving her behind...Painful memories of her own tugged at the inventor's heart as that scenario made her recall a past she wasn't proud of. Ayami wiped sweat away from her forehead as she stepped closer to the fire elfen. She could barely even eak out a weak laugh at the "humor" in Tomina flying clumsily...The inventor's hands balled up into fists...It hurt to listen to what the other girl had to say. It hurt on a deep level. Not because she couldn't handle a sad story. Not because she had to deal with this...But because she was watching something innocent berate themselves. As the story continued that pain only kept building inside. It built up like a pressure cooker, all until...Another hug. Out of the blue the inventor grabbed Tomina forcefully and pulled her into another hug. But this one was different. It wasn't just a friendly greeting. The fire elfen was barely allowed to hide her eyes behind her hands at all before it happened. A light sob was forced out against the water user's will as tears began to flow. The girl's mood had changed so quickly..."It's not fair...!"Her hands were shaking as she gripped onto Tomina's shirt tightly as if the fire user was going to fall away if she didn't. It was very likely the halfling wouldn't have understood this reaction. Not at first. At first glance it would have seemed someone overreacting to someone else's pain...But that wasn't it at all. No it was so much more that brought out this sudden reaction."It's not fair for someone to call themselves a monster...When they were just afraid! You were just afraid! I...I was there too! I've been so afraid that my stomach feels like it's going to kill me! Like I had to do something, like I had to run away!"Her very voice was full of pain. Repressed memories she had held onto...She wanted to be strong for Tomina's sake. This was a girl who had opened herself up. She forced out words between sobs."I'm sorry! It's stupid right...? It's really stupid of me! But I...I lost my best friend too. I don't wanna see you suffering 'cause of something you couldn't control! It's okay to be afraid you dummy!!!"Ayami rested her head on Tomina's shoulder, barely able to contain herself now. Gone was that girl who never stopped smiling, who always took everything in stride. It was...Such a rare side of herself that she hadn't shown to anyone else."My best friend...Taught me everything I knew about inventing. About machines. We were inseperable. Maybe some part of me even...Liked her. You know! Like like! But...One day she said she was moving away to a new home...She wouldn't be coming to my school anymore and I was so afraid! Everybody else thought I was scary! They thought I was way too quirky, that I was some kinda reject! I...I was so afraid! I lashed out at her and started yelling! I yelled and I yelled and I didn't stop cause my heart felt like it was gonna tear apart!! I was so scared that I'd lose my very first friend...The first person outside of my little island home who understood me, the first person who taught me there was more to life than just martial arts!"Between sobs she continued to speak"It's not your fault...I can't stand to see you call yourself a monster over a mistake!"She felt so weak right now...So open, it didn't feel good at all. The inventor went silent as the sounds of machines running filled the dead air. She just held tightly onto the girl who thought of herself as a monster. Tomina

“Heh, of course you do. Just making sure you don’t trap a senior citizen by accident.”
Tomina’s eyes widened when she felt Ayami hug her again. It was much tighter than other ones previously. She could feel the other girl’s body pressing against her. She wasn’t subconscious about it in the slightest, despite the tight clothing she wore. She returned the embrace, leaning her head on the inventor’s shoulder.
“For me it’s fair. I might as well have torn an dragonfly's wings off.”
The floodgate broke, and she sobbed on the other girl’s shoulder. Seeing Ayami also break down was the last straw for her. She couldn’t keep up a strong front any longer. She listened as Ayami mentioned her own friend, Candice. Who had taught her everything about the passion she had in machinery. It seemed like this girl gave Ayami everything. Tomina raised her head, her eyes swollen, her cheeks streaked with tears. She spoke softly.
“This isn’t a mistake I can take back. But you could have patched things up with Candice. What happened after you yelled at her? Did you ever make it up to her?”

The silence was deafening. And yet when Tomina spoke it didn't make that silence shrink back as one's words typically did. Her words cut deeply. "For me it's fair." No! The inventor shook her head and she only gripped onto the fire user more tightly. She couldn't accept those words. She couldn't accept anything Tomina was saying! She placed a single hand on Tomina's head, patting her in much the same way a mother would their own child to comfort them. Ayami certainly didn't view Tomina in that way...But it was clear she needed a comforting hand right now."It's not fair! You've gotta learn to forgive yourself! Even if she can't...Even if Tsuki can't...! Even still you've gotta give yourself that much!"The water user let go of the halfling, she let go and sat down on the floor, pulling her knees up to her chest and wiping her tears away as best as she could manage. She hated being like this. It wasn't anything like her at all. Being weak physically was one thing, there would always be someone stronger than her. That was just a fact of life that so long as a peak existed there would be someone to rise above it. But emotional weakness...It scorned her. It made her look pathetic. It wasn't so easy to get rid of as lifting a weight or performing a single motion to the point of perfection. She only got better at containing it, not getting rid of it entirely."If you can't take it back like this then let me help you! I'll help you learn to forgive yourself! If you don't...How are you supposed to get control over your power?!"Ayami buried her face in her knees, scrunched up in what was practically a ball as she spoke mumbled words to the other girl. Recalling Candence was...Difficult. But she took a deep breath, her voice quivering from pain as she did so."She yelled back...Finally said she was tired of "Being shown up" by my progress... I guess...I screwed up and made her feel like...I was leavin' HER behind...I never got the chance to apologize, and I haven't seen her ever since she stormed out of school that day. ... She probably hates me now, but I still want to apologize to her some day. I'll become the best inventor ever and then...Maybe my words will reach her."The young inventor looked up at Tomina, still wiping away tears and trying her best to smile...She gave the fire elfen a painful, forced, weak smile, but one that showed she wasn't smiling for herself. - She was smiling for Tomina's sake."... If you can't forgive yourself now, then you've just gotta become the kind of person who can." Tomina

“Yes it’s fair! Forgiveness is something that’s earned, not accepted!” Tomina barked. She winced, slipping out of Ayami’s grip and stumbling backward. She took a deep breath, wiping off her eyes with the back of her hand. “I’m sorry Ayami. I didn’t mean to snap like that at you. But actions mean more than words. And forgiveness is something that isn’t up to you. Forgiveness can only be given to the wrongdoer by the one they wronged. And they have to earn it. You can’t just give empty words to someone and say you’re sorry. That’s what the nun who ran the orphanage said. And she’s right. All I could give Tsuki was words. That isn’t enough.” Tomina clenched her fists, shaking her head and looking down. “I don’t know Ayami. I don’t know how I’ll gain control of my powers at this rate. I just have to keep trying and find some way to deal with my emotions. Cause I can’t just forgive myself, I just can’t.”
Tomina looked up as Ayami finished her story. About how she never got the chance to make it up to Candice. So, she felt like Ayami had surpassed her. And they had departed on that bitter note. “Your words and actions must reach her together Ayami. Saying sorry isn’t enough. Actions matter the most. Maybe you could make her something that she really wants.”
Tomina suggested. She looked down at the ground again, tears building up at the corners of her eyes again. She clenched her fists, closing her eyes and trembling. “Things got even worse for Tsuki. Technology is amazing. You can completely fix up someone good as new. But only if you can afford it. Orphans cannot afford that kind of care. Those scars would always be with her. She inhaled so much dust and smoke that it left permanent damage. The doctors called it Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Something like that. They managed to get her stable, but they were going to have to do another operation. They needed to implant a ventilation device to her.”Tomina took a deep breath. She raised her head, looking at Ayami sorrowfully. The pain was etched into her face. It hurt her just thinking about it. And now that she was pouring her heart out, the emotions wouldn’t stop. "I got to talk to her just before that surgery. She insisted on seeing me, while she could still talk normally. It wasn’t as a friend anymore. She wanted to make something clear to me. And it turns out she lost even more than I could have imagined." Walking into the hospital was like entering a different realm. The air was thick with the smell of disinfectant. The bright lights and white, clean walls were in stark contrast to the dirty orphanage. It only added to the unease that she already felt in her heart. Tsuki wanted to meet with her. It had been a few days since the incident. Apparently, she was stable enough to get visitors. Tomina came there with Mother Guiness, who ran the orphanage. When they got to the door to Tsuki’s room, the nun patted Tomina on the shoulder a couple of times. She wasn’t going to go in with her: Tsuki had requested to talk with Tomina alone. Tomina hesitated. Then she pushed open the door and entered. There was Tsuki, lying on a bet with an I.V. injected into her arm. A heart monitor kept beeping obnoxiously. Tsuki tilted her head upwards. Tomina gasped, covering her mouth with both her hands. The left side of Tsuki’s face was horribly burned. Those marks were probably all along the left side of her body. Tomina trembled, tears swelling up in her eyes. “Tsuki, I’m so sorry!” Tomina tried to rush over where she was, but. “ DON’T COME ANY CLOSER, MONSTER!!!” Tomina froze, looking at Tsuki in horror. That yelling had sent the other girl into a coughing fit. She was stable right now, but she couldn’t overexert herself until she had the ventilation system installed. She grit her teeth, gritting her teeth and looking at the hybrid hatefully. “Sorry? That’s all you have to say?! After burning down the orphanage? After nearly killing me? That’s not going to make everything better Tomina!” Tomina let out a choked sob. “I know Tsuki, I know! But you have a family now at least. You’re just not in your right mind right now. We’ll all help you get better.” Tsuki let out a bitter laugh. That quickly devolved into another coughing session. She narrowed her eyes at the other girl. “What family? Mr. and Mrs. Hightower changed their minds. Apparently, they didn’t want to be saddled with my medical bills. Or don’t want to have a horribly burned daughter.” Tomina gasped, looking at Tsuki in horror. “That can’t be… those bastards…” “So they decide to adopt Helen instead. Which is great for her. But the rest of us don’t have a home anymore. Did you even think about the other orphans when you had your temper tantrum? If you knew you had a hidden power, then you should have told me about it!” “I didn’t know, I swear! I’m not supposed to be stronger than you!” Tsuki grunted, sitting up and glaring at Tomina hatefully. “You’re dangerous Tomina. I can’t let you be around the other orphans. They’re my only family now, and I’m going to make damn sure that you don’t hurt them either. That’s why I’m going to tell Guiness the truth after my operation. I’m telling you this now because we were friends. If you stay here then you’ll end up in juvey, at best. Tomina gasped, looking at Tsuki in horror. “No… Tsuki, I…” “Shut it. This doesn’t change any of my plans. I’m going to learn Crane style. And then I’m going to join the military, so I can protect people from monsters like you. Inhuman monsters that burn down an orphanage just because they couldn’t keep their favorite toy.” Tsuki… that wasn’t it! I just didn’t want you to leave!” “Well, you got your wish. I’m not going anywhere. But you’re not going to be here. Run Tomina. I never want to see you again.” “No…” Tomina fell to her knees, pressing her palms against the ground. She grit her teeth, shaking uncontrollably. She then threw her head back and let out an anguished cry. Guinness and the nurses had to escort her out of the room. "I ran after that. I just went from city to city, getting whatever job that I could have. I couldn't make it right, so all I could do was run." Tomina sniffed, looking at Ayami sorrowfully. "How can I make that right? I can't think of anything. I don't deserve to get forgiven. I ruined her life completely. I burned down the home of my fellow orphans. And you think I should forgive myself? Ayami... I can't. I just can't."

Actions mean more than words. It was true, so why didn't Tomina see that was exactly what Ayami was trying to say this entire time? The water elfen frowned a little, but then shook her head when the fire user apologized."You don't have to be sorry, you goof. What d'you think I'm trying to tell ya anyway? Actions speak louder than words ever could, you know that but you haven't even noticed that you knew the answer to your problem the whole time."She shook her head a smile slowly forming on her face."When I said I wanted to help you I meant it. If you still can't say you're sorry then you've gotta become stronger, so much stronger that she'll have to listen to you. Answer her with your actions. Show her you're not the same scared little girl you were back then."The inventor sniffled, she was feeling better after letting it all fly like that, thankfully...Although obviously things weren't perfect. The wind outside was slowly picking up in intensity, it went from a gentle breeze to a low pitched howl as it hit against the workshop in waves, constantly dying down then returning once more like water on the shore."Maybe you can't forgive yourself 'cause you've never really tried before."The young inventor shook her head once more, maybe it was just the onslaught of emotion that made it hard to understand just what she meant, maybe she had been too vague, either way Ayami spelled it out for the hybrid here and now, breaking her own silence after she had listened."I told you, I'm gonna become the greatest inventor alive so she can see how much what she taught me means. Only then can I really go apologize to her. I'm not just gonna use words, I'm gonna use meaning. If I can't reach her then, well...At least I can say that I tried. I can move on in my heart at that point, even if she can't."She went silent for now, just letting Tomina tell her story, letting the girl reveal all of her past in one stroke. It was tough to hear, but...Ayami wasn't a lightweight when it came to that. She had met a lot of people ever since she started traveling more, she heard a lot of different stories and not all of them were happy ones. But it was because her story was a happy one that she listened with absolute candor. Soon however the story came to a close. The inventor sat in silence watching the girl cry..."You think I should just forgive myself?""Yeah, I do."Ayami spoke up loud and clear with fervor in her voice. There was no room for mistaking what she just said, even as the wind blew stronger now, the mechanic stared straight into Tomina's eyes, not wavering for even a moment."How are you supposed to make that first step if you can't even say "I forgive you"? Sounds to me like you've been walking in circles the whole time."She stood up, her posture was firm, unmoving like a sturdy tree that planted it's roots deep into the earth below. This wasn't the girl who quivered like a leaf just moments before...She was intent on making Tomina see past her grief, if even for just a moment."You have to take that first difficult step before you can start climbing out of that rut."She shook her head before continuing to speak."No, it's not easy. Not a day goes by that I don't think about what I did, about how I could have done things differently. But I never stopped moving forward, and you can't either. 'Cause if you stop..."She stepped closer and pointed at Tomina, her gaze was fixed, locked onto the hybrid's own eyes. It was clear from just a glance that there was a burning fire in the water elfen."... Only then are you gonna fall straight to hell."Her breathing was slow, methodic and rhythmic, one could almost swear it matched the billowing of the harsh winds outside."You probably think my flooding accidents were harmless...Well they weren't. If Gramma wasn't as skilled as she is people would have gotten seriously hurt. Even then I still caused her injury. Three times. Three times I let my emotion control me, three times I caused damage to my home and the people I cared about. I didn't shy away from the gift I had. And I'm not about to let you either. Everything Tsuki said about you is wrong. 'Cause your fire...That burning inferno in you..."Her serious expression slowly softened...But only a little bit. She smiled more, a small grin forming on her lips."...It really is a beautiful thing." Tomina

Tomina blinked, looking up shocked at Ayami’s declaration. She made it sound so simple. Shouldn’t the answer be much more complicated than “show her how strong you’ve become” or “you haven’t tried forgiving yourself.”? But then again, she had been so oppressed by her own guilt that she hadn’t tried to tackle it head-on. She just kept trying to get around it, cause that was much easier to do. It was why she had slammed into a wall. She was trying her best to dig under it, but to no avail.
But maybe Ayami was onto something. Maybe she had let her demons dig in deep and was unwilling to pull them out. She loved a good fight and preferred tackling things head-on. But when it came to stuff in her head, she ran away from it. Maybe it was time to just face her mistakes. She looked at Ayami with wide eyes, disbelievingly. Then she snorted, a sad smile spreading across her face.
“I’ve been an idiot. I got so used to running away after becoming homeless. But there was no way I could outrun myself. But I kept on trying anyway. It’s just as you said: I’ve been running around in circles, all this time.”
Tomina’s red eyes were captivated by Ayami’s intense gaze. Sure, she had seen Ayami’s passion when it came to her inventions. But she had never seen her resolved about something. Tomina felt lighter the more that Ayami went on. She couldn’t help it: she felt a slight smirk spread out on her face. She pressed her palm against her forehead.
“Sheesh, I should just accept that you guys won’t let me drown in my self-pity. At this point, I’d feel just as guilty if I failed to meet your expectations than about what I did to Tsuki. Alright, I’ll try using my powers tomorrow. But only if you’re there to put out the flames.”

After just a moment of silence the hybrid finally started to come around...The finger point Ayami was giving her changed into a thumbs up as she smiled at Tomina. It seems like she was finally starting to understand. But the inventor wasn't done with her encouraging words. She continued on after hearing the half-blood out."You don't have to run anymore. We'll all help you stand proud."The water elfen let out a chuckle upon hearing Tomina's next words. She was right, there was absolutely no way she was gonna let the firey girl give up and fall down to hell! And she knew that it wasn't just her, that albino knight was most likely gonna be the same way. And Grandma Aya too, and anyone else close to Tomina. Ayami reached out and rustled Tomina's hair in an attempt to cheer her up."You're not gonna fail to meet my expectations! Besides, even if that was a risk I wouldn't let you fail. You know your sister's gonna say the same!"A bright grin followed as she continued to speak."I promise. I'll put out the fire as many times as I need to 'till you get the hang of it."She pulled her goggles down, still grinning as she reached for a tool and held it up to the heavens triumphantly."Besides, I wouldn't want you to miss out on trashing those thugs. We've got a village to save."Without missing a beat the inventor returned right back to work. She was ready to make sure her backup plans were working properly. After all, if they couldn't handle the enemy, the next best thing was to whittle them down to the level of the trio...As much fun as it was for the water elfen, even she realized that this wasn't a game. The safety of many people rested in their hands. They had to ensure that Penguin Village could be protected even if it cost them everything else."You can get rest now if you'd like, it's gonna be a busy day for all of us tomorrow after all. But I won't stop you from hanging around if you'd really like to. ... Besides, I kinda enjoy the company." Tomina

Tomina snorted, shaking her head with an amused smile on her face. "God that was so corny. And you had me swooning at everything that game before that. But you're right about one thing: both you and my sister are equally stubborn. If you want to keep pulling me up, then I won't fall even if I jump off a building."
Tomina yawned, tapping the front of her mouth with her palm a couple of times. "Honestly, why are thugs that strong also so dumb? Anyway, I'll try not to exhaust you by putting out a million fires. I'm tired, so I'm heading off. You shouldn't stay up too late either. Night."
With that, Tomina departed, exiting the lab and heading back to bed. She didn't feel the weight completely lift from her shoulders. But for the first time since the incident, she felt hope. Hope that she could finally control the one thing she never could. That hope stayed with her all the way back to the room she was staying in. She fell into a dreamless slumber. Her lips curved into a soft smile. She couldn't wait to start the training.
Final post for me in this thread.

The inventor turned back to face Tomina as she worked, a toothy smile crossing her face."Corny is what I do best. You had better get some rest then, so those dumb thugs we're talkin' about don't get the better of you! And Tomina?"Ayami turned around completely facing Tomina and giving her a thumbs up."You'd better start ten billion fires if you wanna tire me out."She watched as the hybrid opened the door, the wind blowing in harshly as it carried the smell of rain on it. The door shut with a thud, and the inventor pumped a fist, the grin on her face only growing more determined."It's time to get to work."The night dragged on as the sounds of hard work continued to echo out into the dark. Machines were pushed to their limits, fire and steel met to create entirely new things. Blue prints were adjusted, checked, readjusted and checked yet again countless times. It was a miracle of modern science in action. A flurry of creation as she created, tested, destroyed, and rebuilt. It had gone on for hours straight into the night as she replicated her creations five times over to ensure there were enough to take on an entire armed military if need be. The time was 3 AM...The wind howled even louder than before, the machines were overworked and it was like an oven in this little workshop as the water elfen worked to create a true miracle of ingenuity. She slammed a new paper onto her desk and rolled it out. It was a map of penguin village...And in each spot was marked a specific trap."A five step plan to destroy Dom Remi's army without fail!"The inventor took a paper weight and tossed it onto a pressure plate, watching as the chains sprawled out on the floor violently contracted, slamming against the weight and pinning it tightly against the plate."Chain traps to knock em out cold and tie them up for the authorities."And then she stood behind a barrier looking out at a funnel shaped gun, she held a button that was connected to the gun by a thin wire. She had set up a test dummy...And then she pressed the button, watching as the dummy was instantly ensnared by a thick roped net that was loaded into the gun."A capture gun to immobilize anyone who tries to dodge the plates."Next was a thin wire that had been tied taut between two points. The mechanic strummed it with a finger to check just how tight it had been made, giving a whistle when she confirmed it to be the right length. She stepped away, back behind the barrier once more, but this time the dummy had been affixed with wheels. She gave it a swift kick on the behind, sending it careening into the wire. The wire was pulled beyond it's limit and a mechanism clicked into place, an emplaced cannon shot out two heavy lead balls with a chain tying them together. The balls spun rapidly and impacted the dummy, knocking it onto the floor and tying it up all in one go."Cannon traps to knock them right off their feet!"Next were tasers with tri-pod stands. Each was designed and painted to be concealable. She stood back away from one and tossed a small scrap of wadded up paper onto the taser trap, watching as it sparked and set the paper into flames."W...Whoa!!!"She hurried to extinguish the paper by stamping it out with her foot. Finally with the test concluded she grew a devilish smile."Emplaced shock traps so we can slow them down long enough to hit them with a REAL knock out punch."Finally but certainly not the least of all was the fifth trap. Ayami lifted this behemoth up with an engine hoist, wiping sweat away from her forehead as she locked it into place in the air. It was a massive pneumatic engine with a five foot diameter solid steel pillar attached. She gave a chaotic evil genius laugh as she stared at it in awe."Finally...My secret backup plan. The Pneumatic Peace Keeper. Wahaha! It's beautiful! It's really beautiful isn't it?! It's like the Mona Lisa recreated in 1:1 mechanical scale!"She attached cables on both sides, standing behind a barrier she pulled back on the cables with all her might, watching as the piston shot out like a rocket, only stopping to where it was designed to. With that much force it was clear this machine could knock an elephant ten feet away. If the rest of these traps were no good? Well...That's why she made the Peace Keeper. She stepped back, looking at the stockpile of traps she had devised. 25 Pressure plates, 30 net guns, 5 cannon traps, 15 taser traps, and finally the Peace keeper itself. She smiled proudly, satisfied with her work as the night burned on."We're ready...It's show time babies!"[EXIT]
