Lemuria
Connection to the Root
(View of Lemuria's Yggdrasil, visible from space)
Lemuria is a cold, harsh landscape that is host to a durable race known as the Salamanders. The planet is shrouded in a heavy atmosphere, resulting in it appearing to have a constant overcast of clouds: A fact that adds to the lifespan of those living on its surface. The terrain of Lemuria is extremely mountainous, with many crevasses and canyons dotting the entirety of the planet's landscape, and plateaus making up the rest. These plataeu ranges are strange compared to Earth's. Instead of being bare cliff walls and gray mountain peaks, the rocky land is host to strange grass that cuts through the dull gray with deep colors of green.
The canyons and crevasses are filled with thick jungles of cold resistant trees. These places were once host to the ancient Salamanders before they rose up to build on the plateaus of the world. The cities and towns of this planet are all built on massive cliff walls and the tops of mountains, structures clearly designed to resist rock slides and seismic activity. Of these cities the most architecturally interesting would have to be Alfheim and the Great Hall. Two places that are almost entirely indoors, resulting in two massive sprawling mega structures with hallways stretching and connecting to buildings for miles. So impressive are these two that most visitors from space will often be taken by surprise, incorrectly assuming both to be single buildings.
Of Lemuria's strange landscapes and architecture however, one thing stands above all else - Literally and figuratively. Yggdrasil. Called "The great light" by the natives of the planet. It towers far above Lemuria's atmosphere, making itself quite easily visible from space. It is a pillar of pure energy that has shaped itself in the form of a tree. It glows with an almost otherworldly blue light, providing breaks in the clouds for rays of sunlight to pass through the heavy atmosphere of the world. For most visitors, a pillar of energy that can be seen from almost anywhere on the planet is quite concerning; But for the inhabitants of this world, it is their lifeline, a benign object that has protected them for centuries.
The Yggdrasphere and the Salamanders
Those who watch over History
Current Council Members: Unknown
"In Light we strive, in Unity we prosper." - The Motto of the Yggdrasphere
The Governing body of the Salamander race, a republic in which five council members are chosen by the people based on their skill levels and in turn those five council members assign the people of Lemuria to tasks based on THEIR skill levels as well. A well oiled machine where each person uses their amassed knowledge to assist in furthering the lives of everyone. They have played a great role in many of history's major turning points. In the distant past they aligned themselves with the Frieza force in an effort to avoid enslavement, in more recent years however they headed the project of restoring the PTO and directing them down a new path.
With the combined judgement and intelligence of the entire Salamander race behind them, the Yggdrasphere is incredibly strong in matters of strategy and planning. Capable of not only looking ahead to the future, but also of preparing for the present by doling out roles to those best qualified to a given task. Despite the harsh environment of Lemuria, the Salamanders have thrived greatly due to these facts.
However, like all other governments, the Yggdrasphere is not without its share of flaws. Their greatest flaws coming about as a result of their culture and genetics. Unlike other races, the Salamander are incapable of perceiving emotion in the same way that an Earthling or Saiyan might. Because of this, when dealing with matters of diplomacy, the Yggdrasphere can find it difficult to cover the emotional aspects of leadership. Pride, Morale, reward, these things are almost entirely alien to a Salamander, as a result they can come off as being "machine-like" to the other races of the galaxy; even worse so when short and long term success requires perfectly understanding the emotional impacts of a decision.
Salamander culture is strange compared to Earth. Their greatest bonds are those forged with friends. An act known to them as "Blood Bonding", a sacred pact that is never to be broken or abused else one will face harsh judgement from their peers. In matters of romance, a Salamander's most important priority they seek is that their chosen partner and themselves both are capable of providing some benefit to the relationship. A sort of "Symbiosis" where they seek to lift their significant other up and by doing so, be lifted up in return. So strong is this priority of "Mutual benefit" that Salamanders do not consider gender or status. There are no such things as "Heterosexual" or "Homosexual" to their culture, much less "Rich" or "Poor". Another factor making such things unimportant to them is their overall relaxed views on reproduction. - Due to a Salamander's naturally long life span of 3,000 years or more, many among them choose to seek offspring later into their lives rather than earlier.
These naturally long lifespans play an interesting role in how Salamander culture views maturity as well. Rather than being split into categories of "Child, teen, adult", a Salamander life cycle covers six stages. "Childhood, Teenage, Young Adult, Mid Adult, Full Adult." A Salamander is not considered fully mature until they reach 100 years of age, ironically resulting in those ages 70 to 80 being viewed in the same way humans view 18 years of age. Indeed Salamanders are expecting to spend 100 years maturing before they are considered for "Adult tasks". The Yggdrasphere will not employ anyone below that age due to an agreed belief that one should take the time to become as capable as they can, to shape themselves into someone who is a true master of their craft.
Among Salamander culture, the most important things are knowledge and philosophy. Their pride for these things are not entirely unlike a Saiyan's pride for combat and honor - Albeit a pride that manifests itself differently from saiyan pride. The greatest path one can take in Salamander culture is to dedicate their lives to the advancement of a particular field of knowledge - Being seen as "heroes" in the eyes of those living on Lemuria.
History of Lemuria
An age of darkness
(Lemuria during the "Dark age")
Lemuria's history began several hundred millennia ago. Long before humanity's greatest achievements, eons before the saiyans became feared throughout the galaxy as warlords, a lone gray planet sat teeming with the weakest of lifeforms, creatures that the earliest Salamanders referred to as "Varani". A world devoid of light. Pure darkness day and night as the brutally cold winds swept across the cliffs. The Varani lizards crawled in the dark depths of the valleys and crevasses below, unable to think beyond their instincts. Creatures focused on their survival in this harsh environment. These were the ancestors of the modern day Salamanders. A shocking almost foreign being when compared to their descendants. Unlike modern Salamanders, these beings were capable of seeing in the dark. A perfect ability for a world with no light to speak of.
For countless millennia they spent their lives without purpose. Desperately eking out an existence, creating the next generation, and then dying due to the harsh, darkened world that surrounded them. For countless years though they operated on pure instinct, some gazed to the top of the cliffs, wondering what might be beyond that pitch black wall. Though they could hardly understand their desires, they unknowingly wished for a future in which they no longer had to suffer for their entire life. They wished that maybe one day they would not be trapped within these narrow canyon walls. According to oral tradition this cursed existence carried on for 297,000 years...
... But then slowly things began to change. Generation after generation of Varani slowly discovered that they were capable of more than instinct. That the misunderstood wishes of their predecessors... Were fully coherent wishes for them. That they were capable of reasoning as to why they wished to see beyond the walls of their home. And as generation after generation of Varani slowly crept away from instinct, they sought unity - The one thing they could guarantee in this hellish world. And finally, after enough struggling, they escaped the walls that held them back. Valley after Valley began to be evacuated as the Varani desired a future above, and as the countless hundreds slowly gathered, they realized their wishes were one and the same, no matter which valley they came from, no matter how old they were, or how much they were capable of independent thought, they all wanted a brighter future.
... And in their darkest hour, a tiny beam of light cut through the ground, towering up into the sky. For beings who had lived their entire lives in pure darkness it was blinding, terrifying even. But for as horrific as this foreign energy beam was... ... It provided warmth and comfort. A bastion from the decaying cold winds that blew across the mountains. Over a period of months the bitter cold winds slowed until they finally stopped. A harsh reality that had plagued them for their entire existence was finally gone forever. Though their world was still cold and dark, the lifespans of the Varani had doubled; perhaps even tripled. The first generation that was born on the cliffs decided to call themselves "Salamanders", and named all the generations who had lived in the valleys below "Varani".
It was from this point onward, marked 2500 years before age that the Salamanders began to record all of their history, including oral tradition passed down to them from the Varani. The beam of light continued to grow over several generations across several thousand years... Until one day the light brought something new to them: intelligence - Greater understanding to them all, incredible insight. They soon found that all those errant thoughts could be understood so much greater than before. Because of the light...They chose to show their appreciation by using this gift of knowledge and life to better understand their place in the universe. They named this pillar of energy "Yggdrasil", the great light.
They chose to give back by growing this knowledge and life of theirs to heights their predecessors could only have dreamed of. And as the years passed by, the clouds above that once brought only death and darkness slowly began to lighten, allowing more and more sunlight to pass through them. In Age 300 the "Dark Age" was officially declared over. A cursed existence from time immemorial was gone, and the Salamander entered a new brighter era. Alfheim "The city of light" was built to commemorate the light age and the hope that their race would prosper far into the future.
