A bright sun shines down on the little island of Beansprout. The skies are brilliantly blue and not a single cloud hangs overhead. The ocean is shining like a brilliant gemstone as hundreds of fishing boats dot it, painting the horizon with a busy image of industry! Here on the beaches we find none other than the intrepid inventor Ayami. But today she's watched by a small crowd of village children, curious on what exactly her latest creation is. It goes without saying but Ayami was definitely playing up the excitement of it all for her audience of munchkins.
"Hey everyone! Don't blink 'cause today you're witnessing history in the making!"
Several hushed whispers, Ooos and Aaas rolled out from the village kids, the promise of witnessing history was quite easily able to register in their young minds as "cool". The elfen inventor could only chuckle in amusement over their gazes of wonder. ... Yet on the inside she was practically melting down from the excitement of having an audience for this test! Ayami gazed off towards the horizon, scanning the blue ocean just before it dropped off out of sight, looking for a marker of any kind...
"See that ship with the red roof on it? Waaaaayy out there?"
The kids all erupted in excitement with confirmation of exactly what she was calling out, every one of them wanting to be the first one to point out the red-roofed ship that stood at the VERYYYYY edge of the horizon. It was at least twenty miles out from the elfen's rough estimation. She gave a confident nod once the children all confirmed that they saw it.
"I'm gonna touch the stern of that baby and make it back here in ten minutes tops!"
The kids all gasped in unison, absolutely baffled by the seeming paradox Ayami had just proposed to them.
"But Ayami, nobody in the village has ever been able to swim that fast! You'd have to be going...Really really fast!"
The elfen girl looked back to the one kid who brought up the problem with swimming twenty miles in ten minutes. She closed her eyes, shaking her head and chuckling.
"Nyehehe... You're right. Not even the toughest person'd ever be able to go a total distance of forty miles in just ten short minutes. Even I can't do that!"
She opened her eyes suddenly, pointing a gloved finger at the boy who brought that up. She began to speak up after waiting a moment to build suspense!
"But kiddo, who said anything about swimming?"
All of the kids gathered to watch this wild inventor started to look amongst each other, each of them whispering various exclamations of surprise and confusion. It was true that Ayami had said nothing about swimming. But...Then how else did she intend to travel across the water? She didn't have a boat waiting on the shore. There were no cars or jet skis or hover vehicles present. To the kids of the village there were no concievable options left to the intrepid elfen aside from swimming. It was then that she took notice of their looks of confusion, hefting up a large steel boot.
"This is what I call...The Anti-gravity Hover soles!!! With these I'm going to glide effortlessly over the ocean, zipping out to that ship and right back here!"
Once again the little group of children was amazed! They all let out Ooos abd Aaahhs in unison, but they also had a lot of questions!
"Can you fly with em?"
"How fast are you gonna go?"
"Can I try?!"
Ayami smiled proudly, patting one of them on the head, she began to answer each of their questions without missing a single beat! Clearly she was prepared for this.
"Nyohoho...That's easy! The hover soles can't fly but they can glide like nobody's business! As for how fast...I've been tuning them for two weeks now, my top speed'll be at least 80 miles per hour!"
And then it came time to answer the last question. Ayami may have been a reckless self-tester who threw caution to the wind on most days, but she still had a moral compass. She simply shook her head. There was NO WAY the Elfen would ever endanger the lives of others with her experimental tests! If something had the potential for catastrophic failure — Even a margin as low as 5%, Ayami made sure no one else was involved.
"Sorry kiddo, these haven't been field tested yet! I can't risk lettin' ya get hurt!"
All of the gathered children looked down about her answer, everyone chanting a dejected "Awww..." in response. Ayami honestly felt bad watching them...But then she perked up and raised a finger!
"BUT. If you all promise to do your chores, listen to your parents, and eat yer veggies, once I've worked out the kinks, big sis will let you ride on her back while she pilots these beauties! You have my word, and my word's as good as gold around here!"
Everyone quickly regained their smiles, cheering as the elfen promised to let them ride along with her once she was ABSOLUTELY SURE the hover soles were safe. She couldn't help but give a bright sunny grin of her own as she watched the village kids promise to be good, each of them high fiving and excitedly discussing the future fun they were going to have! The elfen girl cleared her throat loudly, catching the attention of the children as she began to put on the boots, making sure every single strap was perfectly secure, making doubly sure that each bolt and screw was tight, and finally tapping and pressing the gravity core, ensuring it wasn't moving even the slightest bit. She verbally went over a checklist to ensure that she had a green light.
"Straps secure...Check. Bolts? As tight as mechanically possible! Gravity core...Immobile! It's time! Everyone keep yer eyes on me! I'm gonna BLOW YOU AWAY with my latest and greatest invention!"
Ayami began to stretch, stretching each leg out for several minutes to ensure she was perfectly limber! With that sorted out the elfen girl leaned forward, tightly gripping the dials on each hover sole securely. With her grip certain, Ayami slowly turned each dial one notch at a time. The boots began to hum st a low pitch and with each higher notch reached on the dials that same hum began to increase in both speed and pitch. Finally as the elfen reached the ninth setting on each dial, she was lifted off of the ground, sand being kicked up underneath her feet as the brilliant white grains of sand desperately shifted away to escape the force of gravity being exerted against the ground beneath her feet.
"You're witnessing the future of travel before your very eyes! Amazed aren'tcha?! It's ten billion percent rad!!!"
The crowd began to cheer and clap, they were blown away by how Ayami began to defy the very force of gravity that mere minutes ago held her down against the Earth! She was amused and proud as she watched the reaction of the village kids closely. It honestly warmed her heart. Entertaining and amazing the people was ultimately one of the main reasons she created things. She wanted to give people something to dream of, a future to watch for in wonder and hope. Creating tomorrow's marvels today was just one of the ways she hoped to draw that passion from people.
"Here we..."
The elfen leaned her upper body forward while keeping her legs aimed straight down towards the ground, with one last look back at the gathered audience, Ayami would give them a wink before pulling her goggles down over her eyes. With that done she thrust both of her feet backwards in a flash, causing her to burst forward off of the beach and over the shoals!
"GO!!!"
Ayami accelerated very quickly by performing a skating motion with her legs, thrusting her right leg backwards, bringing it forward, and then doing the same with her left! She repeated this for several seconds before simply stopping the movement of her legs and leaning ever so slightly forward. The elfen was reaching exactly the top speed she had specified as the water below her feet rippled and parted away, creating a wake behind her as she aimed herself straight towards the red-roof ship she had pointed out!
"This is the best! Hahaha! I gotta show this to Zeni and Hono!"
Ayami was making perfect time for her ten minute target as she very quickly caught up to the fishing boat, manuevering behind it and skating right towards the Stern! The fishermen onboard stared in absolute confusion...
"Is that..."
"Aye...It's Ayaka's kid."
The elfen reached out with both her hands and gripped the aged wooden gyardrails of the red-roofed ship, giving a wave to its hard working passengers!
"Nice day out on the sea isn't it?!"
The captain sighed, shaking his head.
"Oi! Ayami, you're scaring off the fish with that contraption of yours!"
Ayami grinned, these old fishermen were always so hardheaded, but they meant well! The elfen girl releases her grip on the stern, standing up straight and giving a salute to the captain!
"Sorry Mr. Mizanagi! I'll leave you to your work!"
Ayami slowed down and allowed the ship to gain distance from her. With it far enough away now that she wouldn't disturb their catches, she turned herself right towards the shore and "kicked off" the waves, launching forward right towards land! As she came ever closer she could hear the kids cheering loudly as they watched her race right back towards them at a speed they could only imagine coming from a car! Ayami gave a big wave to the children, grinning from ear to ear as she slowly slide right back over the sandy beach of Beansprout island! She raised her left arm up, looking to the watch on her wrist. The gathered village kids all watched with baited breath, hoping she had made it in time!
"And the result is...nine minutes thirty eight seconds! I've got almost a whole extra half a minute to spare!"
The intrepid inventor reached down and slowly began to turn the dials on her boots downwards, one notch at a time. As she did so all of the kids ran towards her, cheering in excitement! The much older girl couldn't control herself as she smiled and laughed along with all the others. With her hover soles finally powered down she reaches out and high fives every single one of them!
"You did it Ayami! You really did it!"
"You're the coolest! You didn't even trip!"
"I wanna be just like you when I grow up big sis!"
Ayami really was proud of her efforts here. Not neccessarily because her field test was successful — Although that did play a huge part, but the main reason was because of how she had inspired the kids of this sleepy little village. Most people on Beansprout never aspired to do anything beyond what their ancestors did. Parents wanted sons and daughters to be successful fishermen and carry on the powerhouse fishing industry here alive and strong. But Ayami wanted so much more. And in some ways by awakening dreams in these kids she felt like she had accomplished something positive...
"Nyehehe~, Just stay in school and study REAL hard and one day you'll be just like me! But ya gotta promise me something kids!"
They all surrounded her, listening very carefully to what she had to say — To the promise she wanted each and every one of them to make with her.
"Ya gotta promise big sis that you'll never let go of your passion! Find something you love doing and never let ANYBODY stop you from going after it! You gotta give me your word on this. 'Cause around here our word is as good as gold right?!"
"Right!!!"
They all responded in unison, very happy to have stayed to watch "Big sis" field test. Needless to say, Ayami had gained several life-long fans right here in this sleepy fishing village tucked away from the rest of the world. They were just kids, and sure there were only a handfull of them, but every single fan was precious to the elfen. To her it was someone who was amazed by her passion and talent. And if someone cared enough to believe her talent was something worth watching, Ayami knew in her heart she had to respond to those feelings with nonstop pulse pounding action and showboating!
It was a bright sunny day here on Beansprout Island, and this inventor just had a successful outing she would remember for the rest of her life!
