Vaelaria
Sylvan Scientist
Profile:
Character Name:
Vaelaria
Nicknames:
Vae
Gender:
Female
Sexuality:
Only attracted to science
Race:
Fae
Age:
58
Birthdate: August 29th, Age 1240
Personality:
Likes:
Learning, sweets, soft textures, people's faces when hit with a particularly good prank, SCIENCE!!!
Dislikes:
Bitter food, cold weather, people who pretend to listen but don't actually care, people who accept an explanation full of holes without thinking to dig deeper
Strengths:
- Inquisitive: The Fae have always been known for being childlike in nature, but this isn't always a bad trait. A scientist's mind and a child's curiosity combine into a girl who constantly seeks answers to whatever questions she has. She never seems to stop asking 'why', and even ask 'why' for the answers she receives.
-Creative: Vae's understanding of the world around her lets her endlessly think of 'cool' possibilities that could happen. With access to natural magic, a growing understanding of technology, and ability to begin tapping into ki, there's nothing that can hold her back!
-Optimistic: For Vae, there are no failures! There are simply lessons to learn in things going wrong, and sometimes its even more telling than an experiment going right! Plus the world would be really boring if everything went 'right', and the hero always wins in the end!
Weaknesses:
-Impulsive: Vae has more than a little bit of a tendency to rush into situations without fully knowing what's going on. This leads to her acting on misunderstandings or getting involved in dangerous events. This also applies to speaking to others, causing a bit of a nightmare in diplomatic situations. Her not always thinking an action through has landed her in trouble quite often.
-Childish: While Vae does seem more 'mature' than some other Fae, she can be stubborn and overly emotional even at the best of times. Even if she dislikes the trait, she tends to cry when she gets overly emotional, tearing up even when happy or extremely angry. If convinced of a 'fact' she can be dead set on the belief that its true unless convinced otherwise with 'empirical evidence'.
-Socially Awkward: Vae is a bit of a social outcast due to her odd tendencies. She's 'too boring' for most Fae, and 'too childish' for most other races. Her lack of social interaction means that she can sometimes struggle in social interactions, and accidentally offend others without meaning to. In addition, the questions she has about people might be considered intrusive, but she will try to pester people for an answer.
Vices: NA (Just don't introduce her to caffeine)
Vaelaria is a bright and curious young Fae who looks at the entire world with wonder. Every experience seems bright and new for her, and she can't wait to experience all the 'flavors' life has to offer. Powered by seemingly endless energy, nothing can stop this girl in her quest for SCIENCE!!!
One thing that fascinates Vaelaria more than anything else is other planets and cultures. The Capsule Corporation employees on Hegemon are all too familiar with having a small observer who frequently reads brochures about other planets. She seems particularly interested in Earth and Lemuria, idolizing the scientific minds that come from there. She likes them so much that she tries to dress like some of the scientists she sees pictures of!
While mostly driven by curiosity about the world, Vae also has a strong moral compass, refusing to stand by when there are 'bullying stinkbutts' about. She sees the universe as a naturally beautiful place and seeks to protect it and all life. Vae is a terrible liar because of this, driven by the mentality of 'if you don't want to tell someone you did something, should you have done it in the first place'? Her blunt and loyal nature make for a valued friend if you can get past overly blunt tendencies and somewhat juvenile behavior.
Appearance:
Height: 2'10
Weight: 27 pounds
Hair Color: Lavender
Eye Color: Blue with a pink pupil
Face Claim Name: Katia
Face Claim Origin: Shironeko Project
Vaelaria is an average size Fae, but is barely the size of a child for most races. While she claims to prefer function over form, she has a weakness for pretty things, and will try to copy the aesthetics of those she looks up to. The bow and hairpin she has is a remnant of a childhood attempt to mimic the horns of the salamanders, but fell so flat that it managed to tunnel through the ground to become something entirely distinctive. Her hairstyle is inspired by Earth fashion she's seen, but her naturally curly hair turns what was meant to be pigtails into the twintail style.
The transparent 'lab coat' she has is something she also made, with hardening the sap of the Jubjub tree in thin sheets, and binding them together using an alloy of copper and zinc that looks gold. The rest is the Jubjub resin colored with various berry juices. Her outfit is wear and tear resistant, easy to clean, and super cool looking (At least in her own opinion). She learned far later that she probably could have gotten the material with much less hassle by directly buying it, but she's too proud of it to let go.

Vae was a somewhat strange, even by the esoteric Fae standards. While most Fae were more than happy to use their magic however they wanted for their pranks, Vae's strangely focused magic meant she had to turn to other means. She specialized in moving objects from one place to another, and could only learn other magic through great effort. She had constant questions she wanted answers to, but refused the answers she was given. She believed there was something more to everything than just 'magic', and her insistence upon it has driven both her and others to tears in frustration. She was too boring and serious for most other Fae her age, and when she tried to interact with Elfen they treated her like a child. The questions she had about everything were never answered to her satisfaction.
That changed when she met Dr. Willinger.
Dr. Victoria Willinger was a recent hire in the Hegemon Branch of Capsule Corp. She was brought in from Earth as a biochemist to assess the local flora for any potential use in products. During a routine sample collection, she was nearly bowled over by what seemed like an enthusiastic child. Vae had heard that the 'woman in the white coat' was a person who made 'weird stuff' using plants. Dr. Willinger was showed a pudgy fist full of carefully pulled herbs, along with a babbling explanation for how they were apparently useful medicine, even if the Fae wasn't sure how they were used. Vae remembered that this plant was used in the past when many Fae became sick, but not exactly how.
The odd look in the scientist's eye afterwards seemed achingly familiar to Vae. "I guess we'll have to find out." There was someone else wanted to learn answers as much as she did, and knew how to get them. From that point on, even if it was just unofficial, Dr. Willinger had an apprentice who was eager to learn everything she can, and maybe even a daughter figure of sorts. Years passed, and even when Dr. Willinger became old and gray, Vae remained youthful and vibrant. Eventually, when the time came for her to retire, Victoria was hesitant to accept. She did have family on Earth, but was only ever close to her younger sister. On the other hand, she missed home, and the main reason she stayed in Hegemon so long was to help train Vae as an apprentice She didn't expect Vae to be so perceptive to the inner turmoil she was facing, and for her to be both ready and willing to leave Hegemon. The Fae wanted to see all the world and races out there, to explore and adventure to unknown lands. Besides, Vae could always go 'Home' if need be using magic. Even if her 'Home' was the dimension she sometimes accidentally slipped into. With Vae by her side, Victoria returned home, delaying their goodbye for at least a little longer before Vae left for Lemuria to study with the Salamanders. At least... that was the plan before a quarentine of Earth was called, and the Fae found herself in a bit of an odd situation staying with the other Willingers.
Race Bonuses:
Faerie Ring:
Though the ability to return to their home dimension is thought to be lost, there are a rare few among the Fae who can still return, albeit temporarily. With this racial, once per thread you may teleport yourself and one target into the Home Dimension for three turns, after which you will return to the regular dimension within the same thread.
Double Swap!:
Mastery of pranks and magic can manifest in many unpredictable ways, and this racial is no exception. With Double Swap! three times in a thread, a Fae may switch places with an ally or enemy, switching the intended target of an attack.
Roleplay Example:
"This.... This is what a human young looks like?" Vaelarian's voice is soft, as if speaking too loudly would break a spell on the room and the illusion would crumble to dust. Inside the strange not-bud in front of her was... Dr. Willinger's sister's granddaughter? Human relations were weird and was going to take a lot of time to get used to. Vae is getting off topic, there is a very, very tiny human in front of her. The little human was smaller than even newly fruited Fae were? She had heard Elfen young were this small at some point in time, but she had never seen a small one before. Never this small. _Vae_ was bigger than this tiny young thing, and she was slightly small even among the Fae? Vae started to tear up looking at the young one.
"They-They're so tiny... so small... How are they going to get around in the world when they're that size? Are they sick? Are they going to be okay?" Endless questions babbled out of the young Fae's mouth, transfixed on the human child in front of them. She knew humans were different from Fae, but she didn't know how different.
"They'll grow. Humans don't stay the same size forever, and are closer to Elfen in terms of developmental milestones." Dr. Willinger's hand on her shoulder helped bring her back down from a cloud of worry, and Vae let out a sigh of relief she didn't even realize she had trapped in her chest. The little one was okay, not sick or withering. "Would you like to hold onto her?"
Vae's eyes go wide, even if her arms moved to the position that 'Auntie Charlotte's arms were in when she was carrying the young humanling. "Good position. Make sure to support the head enough, and if anything is wrong the baby will probably let you know herself."
Vaelaria found herself with the human in her arms, cradled against her chest. There was a weird vibration, a rocking every few seconds that felt tiny but powerful. It took a minute for Vae to realize that the vibration was coming from the youngling: it had a strong heartbeat.
"H-Hi there little baby Robin.... I'm Vaelaria, and I'll protect you." She felt so fragile in her arms, yet the force of Robin's heartbeat was almost causing her entire body to rock back and forth. "I promise."
